Some people are reluctant to phone the cops when they hear a burglar alarm sounding, they may make an assumption that it's a false alarm.

Indeed, in some districts police will not respond unless there is also evidence of an intrusion taking place.

Other folks may take the attitude that it is none of their business and just plain selfishly not want to get involved.

Thankfully though, not everybody is like that. Some people do take action when they hear a burglar alarm. This is especially so . . .

Many burglaries involve the thief gaining entry through the window, some sources estimate as high as thirty percent Amazingly, this is often through a window that . . .

He may give up and seek another target, or he may decide to keep watch awhile. A room or two constantly lit does not represent a normal pattern.

In an occupied home somebody is going to go into the kitchen to make themselves a coffee. Somebody is going to use the bathroom. The watching thief notes the lack of signs of people moving about their home, he concludes there is likely nobody at home and makes his move.

With the same home protected by a timer switch, or switches, the bathroom light could come on once in a while, a bedroom light could . . .

Does the apathy of strangers and the bystander effect mean that we are in fact at more of a risk when in a crowd? Conventional wisdom says that there is safety in numbers, and that remains broadly true.

There is a large difference between being with a group of friends and being in a crowd of strangers. You can be completely alone in a crowd.

Friends are far more likely to take action if something happened to you than are complete strangers.

Firstly, friends are more likely to recognize that an emergency is taking place than are bystanders. Secondly, friends are less likely to expect that somebody else will assume responsibility for helping you.

It has been found that bystanders are less likely to be apathetic to the plight of strangers who . . .

Jul 15, Residential alarms help keep burglars away.

Home burglaries have remained constant in Lake Zurich, Illinois in recent years.

"I looked at our statistics back to 2000 and our low annual reporting was 30 (for residential and business) a year and the highest was 53 so in my mind it's a pretty flatlined," Lake Zurich Police Chief Patrick Finlon said.

He believes there are a couple reasons numbers have been steady.

"We should look at the type of community we have here and I think that because we have a middle class to upper middle class community it means that they have good security in terms of lighting, locks and doors." Finlon said.

"I think another issue here that can't be overlooked is the advent of residential burglar alarms."

Police Chief Finlon added that he didn't have exact figures but more residences have added burglary alarms.

He believes if a potential burglar sees an alarm system sign or sticker at a residence he might move on to an easier target to access.

Jul 6, Police Ask For Help Identifying Burglars.

The Duluth Police Department is asking for the help from the public in identifying burglars who may be stealing from homes.

Recent trends show that large flat screen televisions, personal computers, laptops, Play Station and X-Box video systems are being targeted by residential burglars.

The Police Department is asking residents to get to know their neighbors, and to keep a watchful eye not only on their own homes, but their neighbors homes as well.

If someone they dont recognize comes out of their neighbors home with a large television, computer or video game system, they are strongly encouraged to call 911 and report the incident. ( Dont Ignore Suspicious Persons. )

If a vehicle is involved, police ask the caller to get the license plate number, make and color of the vehicle.

The Police Department encourages citizen involvement in preventing burglary and other property crimes, such as vehicle prowls.

Good advice, we should all look out for each other, but do not put yourself at risk.
