May 15, I Don't Like You! - Responding With Verbal Self Defense.

Someone may not like the way you dress, and feels that they have the right to tell you so.

They may not like the way you wear your hair, or your body shape, your beard, the newspaper that you are reading, or the choice of drink you order at the bar. They may tell you they think you are a dork.

Whenever we are with other people there is the chance of being the victim of verbal abuse and being in need of verbal self defense.

Reply in kind by telling them that you think they are a klutz, or that their dress sense also leaves a lot to be desired, and you likely have a slanging match on your hands and that could lead to physical assault.

Verbal self defense is a tool that can be used to avoid and even end these verbal attacks for good.

There are techniques that teach you how to communicate and listen so that the attacker has no fun and no longer sees the victim as an easy target. Many of these techniques can be taught in just a few minutes and can . . .

May 6, Where Can You Hide Security Cameras?

Modern technology has helped make surveillance cameras very compact, this opens up quite a variety of opportunities to hide them both inside and outside your home.

Does this room contain any hidden surveillance cameras? Impossible to tell if the cameras are well hidden.

When deciding on a place to conceal your camera keep in mind the area you wish to keep under surveillance.

It is not much use picking a secret place that somebody is not likely to think a camera could be hidden, if it doesn't give the viewpoint you need. It is not very helpful to capture a video image of the top of a burglar's head for example.

Outside the home you can hide your cameras in pretty much the same places as you would fix a visible camera, except of course the camera would be covered up or disguised in some way. A birdhouse can be a good spot, so too can garden ornaments as many of these are hollow. A camera concealed inside a shed, or garage, could be trained on the back of your house.

Wherever you use hidden surveillance cameras outside your home make sure they are weatherproof.
Inside your home, places to conceal surveillance . . .

Apr 23, Does Identity Theft Punishment Deter Thieves?

As well as denying the thief his, or her liberty, it is hoped that a stretch in jail will act as a deterrent. Not only to deter the criminal from resuming his wicked ways upon release, but to deter others from attempting the crime.

Does it work? Well, there are monumental amounts of money to be made from identity fraud. That must be a major incentive, not only for individual thieves, but also for identity theft gangs and networks.

As well as denying the thief his, or her liberty, it is hoped that a stretch in jail will act as a deterrent.

Then there is the remoteness of the crime. Some identity fraudsters are able to operate from far afield, often from overseas.

Those that steal your identity from your computer for example, do not get physically seen. They feel safe.

Perhaps they feel out of the reach of the law and that, no mater what the identity theft punishment is, the risk for them being caught is small.

Then there is the ego of the perpetrator.

Many identity thieves are very smart. As new, robust measures are put in place to prevent ID theft, the fraudsters set to work to develop ways to circumvent those security measures. If they succeed it is a boost to their ego. Even severe . . .

Apr 15, High or Low Wattage Outside Security Lights?

There are a couple of snags to using high-powered floodlighting, true that it gives off a bright light and can illuminate a large area, but you may find it better to use several lower wattage lamps rather than one high wattage lamp for a couple of reasons.

Lighting is a fairly low-tech security measure that can do a superb job of denying burglars protective cover.

If you use a very powerful lamp even though it throws a bright light any space that it doesn’t cover will be lost in shadow, and that gives a burglar some cover.

Using a number of smaller lamps to cover all spaces you will be better able to deny that burglar any dark hiding places.

Also high-powered lamps even if they are just slightly aimed off target, can greatly annoy your neighbors and that’s something that you don’t want to do! Badly aimed home security lighting has also been known to dazzle passing traffic with deadly consequences.

Outside home security lighting using smaller low wattage bulbs, will enable you to approach your home without being blinded by glare and at the same time . . .

Apr 1, Are sliding glass doors a home security risk?

Those of us that enjoy the advantages of a patio door know what a delight they can be. When open, they provide light and air as well as wide and easy access to the outside. When closed they still provide that light and, if double paned and well maintained, offer protection from the cold and damp.

Are sliding patio doors a home security risk? They can be, especially if you depend too much on the locks fitted to older doors.

However, sliding glass door security can be improved by taking common sense precautions, maintaining the doors and by . . .

Mar 22, Pharming And Identity Theft.

This criminal practice could be described as a close relation to phishing. Whereas phishing relies upon you clicking a link in a fraudulent email that takes you to a bogus website, pharming does the same, only without the email.

Online identity theft. Be very careful about what you download to your computer and any files that you share.

Put simply, criminals exploit a vulnerability in the Domain Name System to misdirect traffic for a genuine website to a bogus site, which is usually a very good copy.

Even if the correct URL is used it goes to a fake copy of the site. The victim enters their personal information that gets used by the thieves to commit identity theft.

The criminals can do this in one of two ways. They can attack an ISP (Internet Service Provider) and misdirect the traffic from there. Major ISP's will have precautions in place to prevent pharming attacks. The easier way from the criminals’ point of view is to install malicious programs (malware) on the victim’s computer.

These malevolent programs are often hidden inside seemingly innocent downloads or shared files. Once they are residing in your computer these programs can lie dormant until you visit your online bank or a shopping site etc., then redirect you to a copy where they grab your pin numbers, card information and other data that you enter.

So what can you do to protect against pharming? Make sure that you have a firewall and anti-virus protection and keep it up to date. Also ensure that your . . .
