Jan 25, Defeating The Opportunist Burglar.

He may be young and not well educated; he may live not too far away from you. The opportunist burglar is highly likely to have a drug habit, a habit that pushes him to find a home to burgle most every day.

He will be looking for valuable items that he can sell fast and he prefers these items to be small enough to carry away on foot. He will be fit. He could be a she. He could be a juvenile.

He does not posses many housebreaking skills; he prefers everything made easy for him. He does not like to break windows unless he is sure that there is nobody within hearing distance, he will look for windows that are unsecured or are secured with a flimsy latch that he can easily slip.

The opportunist will smash open doors that have poor locks, he makes noise when doing this so again he prefers no one around, but best of all he likes unlocked doors.

He loves finding a ladder and perhaps tools that someone left lying around, he will take the opportunity to use these to break in to your home. He also likes to have a look through your window, this lets him know that it will be worth burglarizing your home.

He looks out for houses with mail or newspapers have been left to pile up or other signs that the family may be away on vacation.

He may do $2000 worth of damage to steal just $200 worth of your items and he may sell these items for a mere $20, or even less, what does he care, he only has thoughts on getting his fix.

He will ring your door chime with . . .

Jan 17, Will security features discourage burglary?

A recent research study suggests that the presence of alarm systems or watchdogs do not deter burglars. And that the burglars choose homes that appear easy to break in to, easy to escape from and appear to be lucrative targets.

The research involved interviewing male prisoners aged between 21 and 60 years all of whom had carried out between 20 to 100 plus burglaries within the preceding three years.

The researchers say that all the interviewed burglars "felt security features were rarely enough to deter them". However 17 (34%) said they were dissuaded by alarms and 14 (28%) said the most common reason for giving up on a burglary was "insurmountable security".

These criminals may say that security features, I think we can take to mean alarm and surveillance systems, rarely deter them, but I believe that 34% being put off burgling homes that have alarms, is a mighty good endorsement for alarms.

Likewise I find it comforting that 28% acknowledge that they find the security features at some residences to be insurmountable.

I agree that most burglars will seek easy targets, homes that don't present much of an effort to gain entry, for example a home with a carelessly left open window. Of course, when I say "most burglars" I include . . .

Jan 9, Color security cameras vs. black and white cameras.

At one time color security cameras were only used by organizations and businesses as they used more expensive technology than their black and white counterparts, few small businesses could afford them.

<img width="150" height="238" border="0" camera”="" security="" title="”color" alt="color security camera" src="http://www.surveillanceforsecurity.com/images/color-security-camera-150x238.jpg"/>

Color cameras were almost non-existent in home surveillance because of the high costs involved.

Today’s prices are considerably lower however and the home security market has excellent offers on color cameras that are not out of the reach of most homeowners.

Any security expert will tell you that a camera that can identify different colors is more effective. Knowing the color of an intruder's shirt for example could prove vital for identifying an intruder.

It is true that black and white cameras are more suitable for very poorly lit locations, but when it comes to indoor surveillance, color cameras are absolutely the best choice.

You can also find many color cameras that are suitable for both . . .

Dec 26, Car Theft Happens Much Too Frequently.

If you have ever had a vehicle stolen you will know the hassle it causes. As well as the loss of your property, and the emotional upheaval, it throws you into a spin.

How are you going to get to work, pick up the kids, get the groceries and perform a dozen other tasks that you depend on your wheels for?

Places where large amounts of vehicles are parked for prolonged periods are also places where many car thefts (and thefts from cars) occur.

Statistics show that it is the older and more common cars that get stolen most frequently. For one thing these models came out of the factory with hardly any security installed by the manufacturer and, unless the owner has installed their own security devices, these models are relatively easy to steal.

Also older popular cars are valuable to car thieves, not for what the complete vehicle is worth, but for the parts.

Not that newer, more expensive models don't get stolen but the older a popular vehicle gets - then the more the demand for parts increases and makes that automobile very attractive to thieves.
