Jun 30, 2009, Kids help police catch burglar.

A burglar was caught red-handed as he walked out of the house he was trying to burglarize, all thanks to two alert children.

An 11-year-old girl and her 10-year-old brother, were at home about 9:30 p.m. Friday. The boy was playing video games when he heard the sound of glass breaking. Police would later discover that the burglar used a rock to break the glass from a side door at a neighbor's house near 1000 East and 600 South.

As the boy was watching the events unfold, he got the attention of his sister, who dialed 911 on her cell phone.

Police say because of the excellent description provided by the children, they were able to arrive quickly and spot the home invader just as he was walking out with an extremely large plasma TV in his arms.

Homeowners in the UK have been advised by a senior police officer to leave their car keys where burglars can find them to avoid risking a violent confrontation.

The surprising crime advice came after a low life was jailed for life for bludgeoning to death a 68 year old homeowner in a struggle over his car keys.

But advice from a serving Metropolitan police officer, who has worked on vehicle crime, to leave car your keys where burglars can find them contradicts the official UK Home Office position – supported by the police.

The senior police officer, who did not want to be named, said: 'There are two schools of thought on the crime prevention side. One is that you hide your keys so burglars can't find them. The other, which is my preferred option, is that you leave the keys where they can find them.

True, leaving car keys out on show may reduce the chance of violence but then so would leaving cash and jewelry out on display. Walking out with your wallet held loosely between your fingers at arms length may also reduce the chance of violence during a mugging as well . . .but it is hoped that the senior police officer is not recommending that!

Jun 20, 2009, Home burglary charges for teenagers.

Three teenage males were charged with breaking into a New Hartford home on Wednesday.

Patrolman Jarod Petrie said he responded to 14 Stonebridge Road for a residential burglar alarm at 12:45 p.m.

While checking inside the house, a resident of nearby White Pine Road called 9-1-1 to report three boys running from back yards in the area.

Patrols located three youths matching the description of youths seen in the area, Petrie said.

An investigation revealed that the teenagers broke into the Stonebridge Road home by prying open the sliding glass door at the rear of the house. The youths had intended to steal items from inside, but ran when they heard the alarm activated. All three were apprehended within minutes of the alarm.

The three were charged with second-degree burglary, a class C felony, as well as a felony count of criminal mischief for damaging the door and possession of burglars tools.
